Anyone suffering from halitosis should be looking for a cure, that's fairly obvious, however aside from the problems related to finding the causes of the condition and then a treatment there are further problems that are not immediately obvious. Some of these are derived from the person with the condition not being aware they have it. With full blown halitosis it is difficult to believe that this could happen, it is can be so bad. I can recount two recent incidents where I am certain the sufferer was not suffering as such, in fact, it was the general public that was suffering!

In the local pub, I recently bumped into an old friend and it was great to see her after such a long time. We chatted but as the pub grew louder I had to get closer to hear her. I didn't linger, the stench of smoking was overpowering! The smell was as if the contents of an ashtray were being breathed over me. I do not exaggerate, but this pales into insignificance compared to the second incident.

At a party I was introduced to the boyfriend of an old acquaintance. He seemed fine until he spoke, usually you would assume that it was what he said that was the problem but no, it was his pungent breath. When I recount this incident I am often accused of hyperbole but I assure you I do not exaggerate.

His breath was so strong, so vile and so noticeable you could almost see it! Well perhaps seeing it is a little over the top but you could taste it. It almost had a 'poison cloud' presence of its own. I then asked friends at the party if they were aware of the halitosis, there was a pattern in the replies. Those further removed from the boyfriend where able to express their dislike for his halitosis, while those who knew him better were reluctant to voice an opinion.

Two points come to mind, firstly halitosis can cause distress socially to those without the condition. This can lead to embarrassment and awkwardness, often more pronounced in those without the condition. Often the condition is foisted onto friends and family, reluctant to cause offence to their loved one! Secondly, this 'politeness' can prolong the situation! It does more harm than good. Whatever, it is a particularly undesirable condition, which can reach a terrible stage before treatment is sort.

I would say it is important for friends of a sufferer to let that person know they need to get their condition checked out. Whle the causes are numerous and important in finding a cure for halitosis, the first stage is realizing the problem exists. It is often up to a person close to the sufferer to make them realize they need treatment.
